While a computer software program may help find deductions, there’s no substitute for the quality of service and advice you’ll receive from an experienced tax professional.

Tax Problems

Even if you have not been targeted for an IRS Audit, you may be aware of problems that will catch up with you eventually. Common examples include:

If you don’t know what’s included in your tax record, we’ll help you get copies from the tax authorities without raising any "red flags." Resolution Strategies

  • Settle your tax debt for less than the full amount owed if the tax authority deems your offer to be the most they might collect within a reasonable time period.

  • Payment Plan to resolve debt. This approach protects you from asset seizure to settle your obligations. It may be possible to secure relief on penalties and/or compound interest.

  • The IRS provides Innocent Spouse Relief when for an aggrieved party when his or her spouse or former spouse failed to report income, reported income improperly, or claimed improper deductions or credit.

  • If circumstances do not lend themselves to a negotiated settlement, then it may be necessary to seek protection through a Bankruptcy filing.

We offer two levels of assessment of your financial statements based on your company’s needs:

  • A review is a more limited investigation to provide some level of assurance that material modifications to the financial statements need not be applied. Testing primarily consists of high level examination, year-over-year comparison, inquiry, and analysis. It does not examine back-up data to substantiate the financial data. A review may suffice for selected outside interests.

  • A compilation presents client-supplied data in financial statement format. No assurance is provided by the accountant as no testing, inquiry, or analytical procedures are performed. This service typically serves an internal audience.

Daniel M. Hewitt, CPA

Dan has 27 years of public accounting experience, and 5 years in industry.  Dan started his career with KPMG Peat Marwick as an auditor.  The last 17 years Dan has been in practice in Pueblo CO servicing small businesses in the areas of tax planning and compliance and return preparation for primarily S corporations, C corporations, partnerships and individuals.  Accounting services include compilations and review services, monthly accounting and payroll services.

Dan has a Bachelors of Science in Business with an accounting emphasis from Fort Hays State University.

Karen E. Heerschap, CPA

Karen’s 18 years of experience as a CPA includes tax compliance and planning services for partnerships, C-corporations, S-corporations and individuals in a variety of industries and audit, compilation and review services.  She received her Bachelors of Business Administration and Masters of Accountancy degrees from the University of New Mexico.

D. Kent Couch, CPA

Kent is a co-founder of Hewitt, Heershap & Couch, PC, and has been practicing public accounting in Colorado since 1982.  He is a member of both the American Institute and Colorado Society of CPAs.

Kent specializes in tax accounting for small businesses and individuals.  He also serves as the outside controller of several small businesses.

Kent graduated from Ft. Lewis College with a B.A. in Accounting, and followed up with a Master’s Degree in Taxation from the University of Denver.

Kent started his career with the international accounting firm then known as Ernst & Whinney.  After 5 years, rising to Senior Manager in their Denver tax department.  This was followed by a 5-year stint with the Pueblo office of the southern Colorado firm Grimsley,, White & Company.

Kent formed his own firm in 1993, and later merged with Dan Hewitt to form Hewitt & Couch, PC.  After several successful years, Karen Heerschap was admitted as a shareholder, and Hewitt, Heerschap & Couch was formed in 2017.

Kent and his wife Mary have 3 adult children, and together they enjoy traveling, golf and other leisure activities.
